The Data Center Issue

The data center issue is one that deserves serious attention. I am deeply concerned about the loss of valuable farmland to large-scale development projects like these. Once productive farmland is gone, it is often gone forever, taking with it not only a source of food production but also an important part of our local heritage, economy, and way of life.

At the same time, this is primarily a local issue—not a state issue. Decisions about these projects rest in the hands of county commissioners, county councils, city mayors, and ultimately the property owners themselves. Across Indiana, many communities have successfully enacted moratoriums on proposed developments, giving residents and local leaders the opportunity to ask important questions, evaluate long-term impacts, and consider whether more suitable locations exist.

Property owners absolutely have the right to sell their land, and that right should always be respected. At the same time, communities also have a voice in determining what types of development best align with their values, priorities, and vision for the future. Growth is important, but so is thoughtful planning that balances economic opportunity with the preservation of our farmland, natural resources, and agricultural heritage.

I also recognize the economic opportunities these projects can bring. Data centers can create construction jobs for skilled trades workers, generate investment, and contribute to local economic development. These are real benefits that deserve consideration. As with any major project, there are multiple factors to weigh, and we should carefully consider both the opportunities and the long-term impacts as we decide what kind of future we want for our communities.

Never forget that county commissioners, council members, and mayors work for the people. In a representative government, you have the power to elect them, and you have the power to replace them. If you care about the future of your community, make your voice heard. Attend meetings, ask questions, stay informed, and hold your elected officials accountable.
