
Jim Tomes is the Republican candidate for re-election to the Indiana State Senate representing District 49, proudly serving the communities of southern Indiana.
Senator Tomes currently serves as Chairman of the Indiana Senate Committee on Veterans Affairs and the Military, Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Transportation, and as a member of the Agriculture, Local Government, and Natural Resources Committees. His leadership focuses on supporting Hoosier veterans, protecting public safety, and strengthening Indiana’s rural and agricultural communities.
A Southern Indiana Conservative with Deep Local Roots
Jim and his wife, Margie, were born and raised in southern Indiana and have been married for 55 years. They have lived near Blairsville, Indiana, for 41 years and are proud parents of three adult children and grandparents to four grandchildren. Two of Tomes children and one grandchild have
in the past, or are currently serving in the military.
They are active members of St. Wendel Catholic Church, where they serve as Eucharistic Ministers. Jim is also a member of the Knights of St. John.
Veteran, Worker, and Community Leader
A graduate of Mater Dei High School, Jim served three years in the United States Army, including combat service in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. He is a member and past Commander of Wadesville VFW Post 6576 and holds an associate degree from Ivy Tech Community College.
Before entering public office, Jim worked 33 years in the trucking industry as a Teamster and union steward. This experience gave him a strong understanding of the challenges facing working families, small businesses, and Indiana’s labor force.
Defending Second Amendment Rights in Indiana
Jim Tomes is a founding member and director of the 2nd Amendment Patriots, a grassroots gun rights organization in Indiana established in 1999. Under his leadership, the organization played a key role in establishing the nation’s first Lifetime Handgun License, making Indiana a national leader in Second Amendment freedoms.
The organization received the NRA Grassroots Organization of the Year Award in 2000. Jim has also been honored with the Distinguished Hoosier Award by Governor Mitch Daniels and a Certificate of Appreciation from State Senator Johnny Nugent for his advocacy.
Conservative Values That Put Hoosiers First
Jim and Margie are strong supporters of the Right to Life. Margie spent 25 years as a stay-at-home mother and later served 8½ years as a teacher’s assistant, reflecting their shared commitment to family, faith, and education.
As a constitutional conservative, Senator Tomes believes elected officials are accountable to the citizens they serve. He governs with common sense, integrity, and respect for the Founding Fathers’ principles.
